Humid environments: certifications and safety
A recurring question from hospitality designers: “Can it be installed in a hammam or above a hot tub?” Yes, with no technical issues. PMMA fiber optics are non-conductive and dissipate no heat — in contact with steam and humidity they remain safe and unaltered. The illuminator (the electrical part) is always placed in a technical compartment outside the humid area, with adequate ventilation and a suitable IP protection rating. This type of installation is certifiable for public facilities and complies with the regulations on systems in high-risk environments.

Cobb controllers support the two most widespread protocols in professional hospitality:
- KNX — the standard for hotel building automation. Each starry sky integrates as a KNX node, controllable from the room-management hub.
- DALI — the standard for commercial lighting. It enables fine control of each individual effect from a centralized building management system.

How do you manage a starry sky in a public spa with guests always present?
The controller is remoted to the wellness center’s technical room, accessible only to staff. Lighting scenes are programmed in advance with day/night schedules and weekly cycles. Guests enjoy the experience without any manual intervention. Routine maintenance requires an annual inspection of the light source (cleaning the ventilation filters): 30 minutes of work per year.
Can it be certified for hotels and public facilities?
Yes. All Cobb components carry CE marking, a RED declaration of conformity (for radio controllers), and an IP rating suitable for humid environments. We provide the complete documentation (technical data sheets, certificates, wiring diagrams) required for the DIA / SCIA and for the system commissioning.
How long does a starry sky installed in a hotel open 365 days a year last?
PMMA fiber optics are passive and last indefinitely. The LED light source has a certified service life of 50,000 hours of continuous operation — in a hotel switched on for an average of 12 hours a day, this equals more than 11 years. The controllers carry a 2-year warranty and can be replaced in 30 minutes without disturbing the ceiling.
Can different scenes be programmed for different times of day?
Yes, it is one of the most common requests in hospitality. Example morning scene in a spa: cool white light with slight dynamism for awakening; afternoon scene: warm color temperature, static, for post-treatment relaxation; evening scene: deep night blue with shooting stars for an evening atmosphere. Everything can be programmed with daily/weekly schedules from the controller or from the central home-automation system.
Typical installation dimensions for a spa area?
A standard relaxation area (tepidarium, bio-sauna, emotional shower zone) ranges from 15 to 40 sq m of ceiling. A junior hotel suite: 3-5 sq m. A 5-star lobby: 20-60 sq m. For each one we size the appropriate star density (typically 300-600 stars/sq m in hospitality for strong visual impact) and light-source power (3W, 9W, 20W, up to multiple light sources for installations over 50 sq m).
